Ep. 90 – Dr. Chap Clark: Raising Kids in Today's World

Raising kids today seems harder than ever. There are so many things weighing them down, from relationships, school demands, social media, and more. Dads need to guide kids through it all. In this episode of the All Pro Dad Podcast, Dr. Chap Clark shares wisdom from his years of experience studying teens and their behavior and tells listeners how to better understand and support their kids.

Why This Matters

Kids feel pressure—to perform, fit in, and be liked. This causes friction and tension, but dads can be the steady presence they need.

Know the Language

Dr. Clark has written 18 books and shares a few terms in this episode that may be new to you. Here are a few:

  • “Mosaic thinking”: It’s very hard to get them to focus on just one thing at a time.
  • “Avatar”: In order to fit in, kids will build different ‘avatars’ of themselves depending on the social situation they’re facing.
  •

Troubles For Modern Kids

Dr. Clark points out a few key things that kids deal with that dads must try to understand.

  • 1. Life feels very transactional: This leads kids to try to, as Chap says, “perform my way into blessing.”
  • 2. Kids, statistically, are lonely: Guys are more lonely than girls, but they are less able to recognize it, much less admit it.
  • 3. Belonging matters: Dr. Clark says the “power of belonging” is paramount. Kids are looking for a place where they feel accepted.
  •

Practical Tools for Dads

What can dads do? Some of Dr. Clark’s tips:

  • 1. Leave work at work: “Once I got in the car to go home, I had to exit myself and prepare to enter into the home where people are counting on me to be present and attentive to their needs.”
  • 2. Don’t force it: “Don’t try to force your kid into a relationship that you haven’t built organically.”
  • 3. Learn to read the room: “Be kind to yourself, take a count of five, deep breath, and ask, ‘What does my child need and how can I be a sense of purpose and belonging?’”
  • 4. Choose empathy: “Empathy is where I get inside somebody else’s skin and walk together.”
